Bars and Barlines

Bars help us organise music on the page to make it more readable, and easier to follow.

Bar lines are simply vertical lines that act as separators between the bars.

Instead of placing notes all over the staff, we break it down into bars:

4 empty bars

The bars are always equal to one another.
Here we have two bars in 4/4 time.

Two 4-4 bars
  • The 1st bar is made of a Minim and 2 crochets.
  • The 2nd bar has 2 quavers, a Crochet, 4 Semiquavers, and another crochet.

They both amount to 4/4

Example

Let’s take the famous melody of Minuet in G:

Anna Magdalena
Excerpt: Minuet in G from Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach

As you can see, it is essentially an endless stream of notes. The longer it goes, the more difficult it would be to follow.

In comparison, writing the music in bars give us a sense of placement within the staff.
